Ottawa, April 25, 2014 – The Supreme Court of Canada has provided an important opinion today with respect to the Senate Reference. I wish to thank the Court for the guidance and insight provided. Parliamentarians will want to take the necessary time to study and reflect on the opinion in detail.
All those who assisted through public comment, by filing factums or by making arguments before the Court should be congratulated on their contributions to our understanding of our Constitution, our Federation and the Senate itself.
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Quebec Conference, where the Senate as we know it was framed. The wisdom of the Fathers of Confederation is evident in the success of their dream for our nation. Throughout a century and a half, the Senate has been an important national institution in the promotion of freedom and the Supreme Court of Canada has confirmed that the Senate continues to be an integral element of our system of governance.
